Business was brisk on Friday at the Calico Hat Company booth at Stagecoach.
The booth, brimming with cowboy hats stacked in neat piles, was a popular stop-off point for festival-goers before entering the main grounds.
Brothers Joe Duarte, 22, and Christopher Duarte, 23, of Redlands, plopped a couple of straw-type models on their heads and made a quick purchase decision.

No two Coachella weekends can truly be alike. Despite talk about the lack of surprises – organizers tipped their hand the first weekend as the second Saturday of the annual music and arts festival began, there was a marked difference in the air.
It was hotter, at times gruelingly so. And there was a celebratory air wafting across the festival grounds.

Natalie Bergman and brother Elliot, who hail from the Chicago area, exude a boho vibe that is right at home at Coachella. Prior to Wild Belle, Natalie joined Elliot in an Afrobeat band, Nomo. The two struck out on their own, and have released an album, Isles, with heavy reggae and jazz influence. The group is no stranger to the fashion scene. Last year, the band played the Mulberry pool party at the Parker Palm Springs. This festival, Natalie takes her look down a decidedly retro path with John Lennon sunglasses, a fringe vest and distressed skinnies. A necklace in traditional Rasta colors completes the look.

During the time I’ve spent people watching around the polo grounds, I’ve picked up on what might possibly be the latest festival trend.
Flowered garlands may be the thing for female concert goers right now, but bandanas seem to be trending for the fellas.
I’ve seen handfuls of guys wearing bandanas and scarves around their necks and also over their mouths.

Emily Haines rocked this season’s dominant color palette – black and white – with fringe. Fashion trailblazer Janelle Monáe, instantly recognizable as the face CoverGirl, gives the trend her own signature twist with suspenders.
Men’s wear for women is hot, and who better to derive inspiration from than the icon who is instantly recognizable – both in music and fashion – for her glamorous riffs on tuxedo chic.

Metric’s Emily Haines brings a heavy dose of glamor to the indie rock scene: Her blond hair and sharp features and wit recall the fierceness rock pioneer Debbie Harry crossed with the cool-girl intellect of magazine and online editor Jane Pratt. There may be 50-plus bands to see at Coachella, but most festival-goers also build time into their schedules to see the other sights — like the Do Lab, Ferris wheel and a host of small art installations.
Then there’s the swag.
Immediately inside the festival entrance is a huge tent marked “Merchandise.” That’s the place to be to score official festival t-shirts — there are many — and the latest and greatest T-shirts from bands performing the fest. Some are even customized for the event, like the Wu-Tang Clan t-shirt reading “Coachella ain’t nothing to F with.”
Me, I opted for a customized t-shirt that was screenprinted in front of my eyes by a really nice guy from Philadelphia who looked seriously tired.
