Coachella 2013: Lost and found items by the numbers

I don’t envy whoever’s in charge of this year’s Coachella lost and found inventory.

The catalog of left-behind personal items at Coachella 2013 totals about 750 — including 407 loose IDs, cards and passports.

But it seems like the increased attendance of this year’s festival — up by about 10,000 from Coachella 2012 — led to a higher concentration of responsible festival-goers, considering last year saw nearly 900 lost and found items catalogued.

Festival workers are apparently having more trouble this year with cell phones, though — more people are adding lock codes to their phones, “making it near impossible” to find the owners.

Stagecoach: Ashton Kutcher scuffles with security, report says

Ashton Kutcher got into a violent melee with security at the Stagecoach country music festival, according to TMZ.

Kutcher was in the VIP area Saturday afternoon to check out Nick 13 and Dwight Yoakam when a woman approached him to say, “Hi” and shake his hand, according to sources cited by TMZ.

“We’re told that when Kutcher went to greet the woman, security intervened and shoved the two of them … and chaos ensued,” according to TMZ.

Don Williams is back, baby.

Williams, one of the greatest country singers before country went modern,performed a “Farewell Tour of the World” in 2006. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010. Then he came out of retirement.

He will play Stagecoach at 4:50 p.m. Sunday in the Palomino tent.

Before his set, we wanted to relive this Q&A with Williams, which was originally posted in The Desert Sun on Nov. 17, 2011. It was before he performed at the McCallum Theatre. At the time, interviewer Bruce Fessier wrote:

Williams, 72, spends most of his time on a farm in Floydada, Texas. But he has 17 No. 1 country hits, including the Eric Clapton-covered “Tulsa Time,” and said by e-mail recently he’s enjoying being on the road again.

The Desert Sun: You were called “the reluctant superstar” before Garth Brooks came along. Were you reluctant to become as big as Garth or would you have liked to play stadiums?

Stagecoach is being streamed live for the first year ever. Sorta.

Now, it’s not exactly like Coachella, where you could watch the (slightly delayed) live stream via Coachella.com and YouTube.

But some of California’s country music festival is being broadcast on AXS TV, the cable channel co-owned by Mark Cuban.

George Jones dead at 81

Country music artist George Jones, who performed at Stagecoach 2008, died Friday at age 81, according to publicists Webster & Associates.

Coachella 2013: Extra security checkpoint amid Boston marathon manhunt

As Boston was locked down amid a massive manhunt for a suspected terrorist, tens of thousands of people flooded into the valley for the second Coachella weekend.

At least one additional security checkpoint was opened Friday at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

“1^st #Coachella Music Fest security checkpoint is strictly for bombs, security personnel tell me,” photographer Crystal Chatham tweeted.

Police were “being more vigilant” as a precaution, Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron said.

Roy Hay, one of Boy George‘s bandmates in Culture Club, is in the Coachella Valley to watch tennis at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, but he also swung out to the Kraft Nabisco Championship‘s media day and golfed with our sister site’s golf guru, Larry Bohannan.

Bohannan recounts meeting Hay on his blog on MyDesert.com, and he also filed a video report on what’s planned for the golf tournament.
