“You’re gonna know my name by the end of the night,” Gary Clark Jr. boldly declares on “Bright Lights,” the sort-of single off his EP of the same name.
Consider your name known, Mr. Clark.
For the second week in a row, the Austin, Texas, native blew up the Gobi Tent with his screaming electric blues/soul.
Don’t wait for Rolling Stone or the New York Times to tell you; let me be the first — Clark will be considered one of the top breakout performers at Coachella 2012.
How to describe his sound? … Put B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz and Prince in a blender; then watch as something uniquely his own comes out.
Clark maintains a cool on-stage demeanor as his vocals range from low, bluesy growls to soulful, soft falsettos. And his guitar work? You haven’t heard blues riffs played with such ferociously heavy, face-melting distortion since Hendrix.
Think I must be overstating it? Get thee to You Tube and check him out for yourself.
Those who saw Clark’s set this year will one day be able to say they saw him when all he had out was an EP.
