AMFM Fest: A change of tune for the Coachella Valley?

The Coachella area is no stranger to festivals, but AMFM Fest could bring a fresh vibe to the valley.

At first glance, AMFM Fest may seem like just another ambitious festival from well-intentioned backers. By now most people have grown used to glittery lines about “synergy of shared visionaries” like the ones dropped in the mission statement of AMFM’s parent organization, Film 4 Change. Great ideas, but a film organization that actually rolls up its sleeves and digs up the voices that need to be heard? Rare.

If AMFM’s music lineup is anything to go by, though, Film 4 Change could be looking in the right places.

The fest puts the spotlight on a wide range of acts with lower profiles than the usual Coachella crowd. From the bilingual Machin’ and offbeat Palm Springs rapper Felix Nobody to soulful SoCal rock outfit Family Wagon and a pair of guitar-wielding, Native American twins called Miracle Dolls, AMFM keeps it eclectic.

Film 4 Change claims to push for social change, and unlike many similar organizations, it has put together a festival with the diversity to back that up. Looks like a promising start for the brand new AMFM Fest.

Coachella 2013: Lost and found items by the numbers

Coachella 2013 lost phoneI don’t envy whoever’s in charge of this year’s Coachella lost and found inventory.

The catalog of left-behind personal items at Coachella 2013 totals about 750 — including 407 loose IDs, cards and passports.

But it seems like the increased attendance of this year’s festival — up by about 10,000 from Coachella 2012 — led to a higher concentration of responsible festival-goers, considering last year saw nearly 900 lost and found items catalogued.

Coachella posted some of the items its found from the festival. (Courtesy of Coachella)

Festival workers are apparently having more trouble this year with cell phones, though — more people are adding lock codes to their phones, “making it near impossible” to find the owners.

Here’s what I counted in the lost and found section of the Coachella website:

“So much has happened in the festival scene in North America with Coachella and Bonnaroo. … We’re trying to do our own thing. Obviously they’re the front-runners, but I can’t think of any better place than Detroit to carry on the success we had in New Jersey.”

— Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, quoted in the Detroit Free Press about the Orion Music + More festival

Allman joy

Part of the enduring appeal The Allman Brothers is the authenticity of the material: Southern blues  tinged with gospel and country.   Gregg Allman, the band’s focal point since his brother Duane died in a motorcycle accident back in 1971,  performed a stellar solo set Saturday backed by his long-time touring group at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio.

After decades of deteriorating health, substance abuse, legal troubles and failed marriages, the  65-year-old vocalist seems  to have emerged from the hardships documented in his 2012 autobiography, “My Cross to Bear.”  Playing  his signature B3 Hammond from his customary position on the left of the stage,  Allman opened with 1987′s “I’m No Angel,” revealing a soulful rasp left somehow intact.

Of course the set leaned heavy on Allman Brothers classics like  “Whipping Post,” ”Midnight Rider,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Stormy Monday,”  ”Sweet Melissa” and the encore, “One Way Out,” but one of the gems was an acoustic version of Jackson Browne’s “These Days,” a song first recorded by the Velevet Unerground’s Nico in 1967. Although the concert wasn’t a sell-out, the crowd energy was better than your typcial desert casino show, with fans punctuating instrumental breaks and vocal lines with hoots and hollers of encouragement.

And for that, Allman  seemed genuinely appreciative to be a long way from Georgia.

Coachella website

The Coachella website shows a hint about an announcement coming Monday.

Goldenvoice will make a Coachella-related announcement on Monday — and music fans can probably get ready to open their wallets for next year’s festival.

A picture posted to the Coachella website and social media accounts on Friday shows an artistic photo of Coachella with the text: “10 a.m. Monday.”

If history holds true, Goldenvoice will likely announce the dates for the 2014 festival weekends as well as an advanced ticket sale that could happen within days.

It was about this time last year — May 14, 2012 — that Goldenvoice announced the next year’s dates, then opened advance sales from May 17-24, 2012.

The Desert Sun’s music site — MyCoachella.com — will provide an update as soon as the announcement is made on Monday.

Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Eazy-E follow Tupac hologram

The Tupac Shakur hologram was the story of the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, so you knew it was just a matter of time before it caught on. It just took a little longer than expected.

The Rock the Bells festival will feature both  Eazy-E and Ol’ Dirty Bastard holograms, rollingstone.com reported Wednesday. ODB will join his former  group, the Wu-Tang Clan (which performed at this year’s Coachella), while Eazy-E will be alongside Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, a group he signed in the mid-’90s.

Rock the Bells kicks off Sept. 7-8  in San Bernardino.
